The Development Set
So long Public and Labour Economics, welcome a (should be) thesis-only concentration epoch. Today's post is dedicated to the aforementioned (in the last post) one of the best classes I’ve ever taken.
Please find below the last handout from the class: the poem was written by Ross Coggins in the 1970s but somehow I strongly reckon that it still fits right into the modern world today, don't you think so? C'mon, isn't it exactly what's happening when a group of development economists are trying to help the poor on site?
The Development Set
By Ross Coggins
Excuse me, friends, I must catch my jet
I'm off to join the Development Set;
My bags are packed, and I've had all my shots,
I have travelers' checks, and pills for the trots.
The Development Set is bright and noble,
Our thoughts are deep and our vision global;
Although we move with the better classes,
Our thoughts are always with the masses.
In Sheraton hotels in scattered nations,
We damn multinational corporations;
Injustice seems so easy to protest,
In such seething hotbeds of social rest.
We discuss malnutrition over steaks
And plan hunger talks during coffee breaks.
Whether Asian floods or African drought,
We face each issue with an open mouth.
We bring in consultants whose circumlocution
Raises difficulties for every solution --
Thus guaranteeing continued good eating
By showing the need for another meeting.
The language of the Development Set
Stretches the English alphabet;
We use swell words like 'epigenetic',
'Micro,' 'Macro' and 'logarithmetic'.
It pleasures us to be esoteric --
It's so intellectually atmospheric!
And although establishments may be unmoved,
Our vocabularies are much improved.
When the talk gets deep and you're feeling numb,
You can keep your shame to a minimum:
To show that you, too, are intelligent
Smugly ask, "Is it really development?"
Or say, "That's fine in practice, but don't you see:
It doesn't work out in theory!"
A few may find this incomprehensible,
But most will admire you as deep and sensible.
Development Set homes are extremely chic,
Full of carvings, curios and draped with batik.
Eye-level photographs subtly assure
That your host is at home with the rich and the poor.
Enough of these verses -- on with the mission!
Our task is as broad as the human condition!
Just parry to God the biblical promise is true:
The poor ye shall always have with you.
From “Adult Education and Development” September 1976.

cool! a poem!
Booooooorrrriiiiinggg!!! Not enough gun fights or sex scenes or hangliders in your posts.
yes. conspiracy theories of human being are so interesting huh...
at least i updated my blog. Oh, and yeah i went hangliding several times, great fun but nothing much to say about though - just hang up in the sky...
lalalala...
uh no, that doesn't sound anything at all like a development economist. More of like some rich snob feeling sorry for the poor and try to feel good about themselves
there's only one term to describe DE -> Game Theorist! Although no one ever call him/herself a game theorist, not even Nash or von Neumann and Morgensten (supposedly the father of Game Theory, the latter 2)
ok, i really need to find a cool name for my blog coz i realize i have a lot to say
yes you should definitely put your blog back on, I miss it big time.
i guess development economist might be a bad term... what should i call them... umm, anyhow, i recall that they all sounded like the poem when i was at the WTO multilateral roundtables.
Yeah. Nat. I think the poem is meant to be facetious. They did it on purpose yo. It's making fun of development economists and their ilk. Yeah, exactly. People like YOU! People who say that there's full employment in rural Sudan. Go back to your Sheraton and Macro and Micro logarithms!
Hehe. I said ilk.
k my blog is up again

what does a development economist actually do? i guess prof. kyle is considered a development economist. he's a consultant to angola and i think advises them on appropriate macro policies. he probably goes to a bunch of conferences on development too. i don't think i have a point to make, i'm just randomly typing now. ok, now i'm sleepy.
i know, i miss that class a lot - feel so empty without it. and yeah, tv is quite good on monday night i just knew. ah, and wednesday will be the next in line.
